Today has been one of those days.

It's nasty as hell outside. Rainy and freezing. Hadley has been fussy. Our move-in date for the new house has been pushed back. 
Mommy has a headache. 

So what do we need? Carbs. And lots of them.

My fierce, Italian grandmother gave me her recipe for tomato sauce a few weeks back and I've been saving it for a rainy day like today. It's easy, delicious and makes your house smell DA-VINE.

To go along with the delicious sauce I decided to get real bold and make homemade pasta. I've always been curious about how to make your own pasta and it was surprisingly not so scary.

This recipe makes enough pasta for 4 people with lots of extra sauce.

W h a t   y o u   n e e d . . .

For the sauce
3 large cans crushed tomatoes
1 sweet onion, finely diced
4 cloves garlic, crushed
1 medium carrot, cut in half
olive oil
kosher salt
fresh ground pepper
italian seasoning
goya seasoning - corriander and annatto flavor

For the pasta (recipe from Pioneer Woman)
2 cups of flour
4 eggs

W h a t   y o u   d o . . . 

For the sauce
In a large pot on medium heat add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once the olive oil is heated, add the diced onion and crushed garlic. Add 2 teaspoons of kosher salt, 1 teaspoon ground pepper and 2 teaspoons italian seasoning. Let the onions and garlic sweat for 5 minutes, until translucent. 

Next, add the 3 cans of crushed tomatoes. Stir well. Add 2 more teaspoons italian seasoning, 2 teaspoons goya seasoning, 2 teaspoons salt and 2 teaspoons ground pepper. Add one tablespoon of olive oil and stir well. Make sure to taste at this point.. if you want more seasoning feel free to add more! I loaded mine up with italian seasoning, so yummy!

Add the carrot halves to the sauce for sweetness. Reduce the heat to simmer and let sit for one hour. 

Once done, take the pieces of carrot out.

For the pasta
Fill a medium sized bowl with two cups of flour. Create a "ditch" in the flour so you can crack the eggs into it. Crack all four eggs into the "ditch". Now here comes the messy part. Use one hand to work the eggs and flour together. It's going to be really sticky and out of control. Just keep kneading with one hand until it starts to come together. 

You can add flour to your counter and knead with both hands once the stickiness dies down a bit. You want to knead the pasta dough until it is no longer sticky or tacky. It'll become more smooth as the gluten breaks down. When you're done kneading let the dough sit for a few minutes. 

After your dough has rested, cover your work surface with flour and use a rolling pin to roll the pasta out. You'll want to get it as thin as possible. The pasta will plump up when you cook it so the thinner the better. 

Once your pasta is rolled thin use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut the pasta into thin strips. 

Your pasta is now ready to cook! Prep a pot with salted water. Once it's boiling add your pasta and cook for 4-6 minutes until tender. This pasta definitely has more of a bite to it versus dried pasta so it will be al dente.

And there you have it my little Italian minions!

Add your homemade tomato sauce, some parmesan cheese and DEFINITELY some garlic bread.

...teeth that is.

I am alive. The procedure went freakishly fast and oddly well. I didn't even have any funny/odd/wacky reactions to the drugs. I felt completely normal. *bummer* I know some of you were looking forward to an embarrassing video. Such great friends you are :-P

Yesterday Hadley and I had a big day in DC (running annoying errands BOO) and then we went to Chipotle for my "last meal". I had a burger later that night.... but you get it. 

I ordered Hadley her own little tortilla and filled it with parts of my burrito bowl. She was in heaven. I knew this girl was my kid. WE LOVE YOU CHIPOTLE!!!!

Fast forward to today and I've downed two bowls of Kraft mac n' cheese (the spongebob noodles are my favorite) and am straight chillin' on the couch. Getting your wisdom teeth out ain't half bad!

Josh and I have a big trip coming up this summer to the Firefly music festival and I am so freakin' pumped about it!!! Firefly holds a special place in our hearts because of how we met. You can read more on that story here. We we're supposed to go last year but had to cancel because a certain someone was coming into the world 3 weeks prior :) But the trip is definitely on for this year!!! 
Which means time to hunt for some badass clothing.

Festival fashion is the best fashion in my eyes. It's free-spirited, wacky and there are no rules. It is the best time to experiment with your outfits and wear that one crazy thing you've always wanted to wear. And as a girl who has been rocking mom attire pretty much 24/7... I am LIVING for this week of balls-to-the-wall, grungy hippie-ness. The weather will be summery (aka sweaty) and beautiful. Flower crowns will be warn and faces will be painted. IT WILL BE GLORIOUS.

I've rounded up a few of my favorite festival finds so far. There is SO much out there. I looked for hours this morning and feel like I haven't even broken the surface. Best news is, lots of these looks are under $25. No one wants to be rocking a $200 piece of clothing when beer is sloshing everywhere in an epic mosh pit and then you decide to go mud sliding later... these things happen. 

If you can't tell.. I am really digging the kimono, fringe, florals (always) and tribal prints. Also, the pineapple hat is possibly my new favorite thing. I can't tell you why, I just LOVE IT. And it will be on my head at one point or another on that trip. If it fits this big dome.

Easter goodness

As I sit here, I can here 1950s tunes softly playing from Hadley's room. "I only have eyes for youuuuu." My grandmother is up there dancing and singing her to sleep like only a great grandmother can. It fills my heart with so much joy, knowing how much family and love our little girl has around her. I feel so thankful.

Our weekend and Easter was absolutely wonderful. 

On Saturday we had a picnic down on the tidal basin in DC. The cherry blossoms were less than impressive.. apparently the week before was peak bloom.. but some great weather, delicious fried chicken and Hadley's dance moves made up for it. We also had a pretty great view of the Jefferson memorial. Hadley LOVED the fried chicken. She walked around with a drumstick in her hand for a good 45 minutes. She managed to eat all of the skin off of it and a bit of meat... even while dropping it like it's hot.

I love doing things in the city. I've grown up around DC my entire life yet there is still so much I haven't seen or done there. Time for a DC bucket list!

For Easter we went to brunch with my mom and sister and then came home and took some delicious naps. Maybe it was just me who napped.... but it was DEVINE. Soon after that my grandmother and aunt came over. We watched movies, including Frozen!, ate more yummy food and relaxed together. It was low key and awesome. I loved every second of it.

Hadley got her little basket and looked at it for five seconds before moving on to something else... probably a plastic bag or cardboard box. Classic baby move. I can't wait for the egg hunt next year! I have a sneaky feeling she's going to be really aggressively into it.

Yes, we let our kid run around the restaurant barefoot. We are those parents. She then made friends with this little girl and stole her brand new stuffed doggie. *Angel*

Bunnies, dyed eggs and lots of egg salad. I freakin' LOVE egg salad. 

Easter is almost upon us and I am super excited for yummy brunch and possibly some adult celebrating via shots out of plastic eggs. Sunday Funday anyone? 

But before all of that debauchery can begin we need some colorful eggs.

Last night my dad&co brought over some chinese food and dye kits and we got right to it! 
I forgot how fun it is!!

Today I showed Hadley the egg with her name on it. She promptly took it from my hand and chucked it on the ground. Good work, kid.

You can see where are all the basket goodies are from in this post. I absolutely LOVE the North American Bear Company rabbit! It is SOOO soft. Hadley has just recently started carrying stuffed animals around with her everywhere she goes so I know she is going to love this little guy :) 

I am not kidding when I say cold, big carrots are the best teething toy EVER. Hadley noms on that shit all day long. My little bunny!!!!

Other than prepping for Easter we are going down to DC to check out the cherry blossoms on Saturday with some of my favorite people :) I am making fried chicken for our picnic and I could not be more excited about it. My stomach is grumbling as we speak. MMMMMMM aaaaand I'm salivating. Should be a beautiful day!!

It's almost the weekend people, I can taste it! 


Wedding DIY whimsies

Josh and I aren't getting married until the fall of 2015 but I can't help but check out all the awesome DIYs that are out there on the good ole world wide web. 

We're really trying to stay within a reasonable budget for our big day. We both love to throw a party so it's hard for us to rein it in but one of the best ways I can help in that department is by making as much as I can! I think it'll make the event that much more special to us knowing we put so much work into every detail. 

Here are a few of the things I already have my eye on...

Photo booth heart back drop - In my mind, one of the absolute best parts of a wedding are the memories captured on camera that can be treasured forever. One of the best ways to do this AND get your guests in a party mood is with a fun photo booth!! I LOVE this heart backdrop created by the gals over at Design Love Fest. Just some wood, wire and red napkins.. VOILA! Who knew?! 

Faux grass table numbers - Ahh, the almighty Julep strikes again. These bad boys don't look hard at all and I love the idea of some bright green popping on the tables. I really want our ceremony to feel relaxed and full of natural touches so these fit perfectly. 

Glitter mason jars - Come on, enough said am I right? I'm a mason jar addict and the soft glow will be so pretty under the tent at night!! I swear I didn't mean for that to rhyme...

Gold leafing on invitations and envelopes - How did I not know a pen existed like this? All gold everything. I love the look of the bright gold on the craft paper envelopes and the thick, gold-edged invitations are so fanciful. I'm not sure if that is a word but that is how they make me feel. 

Baby's breath flower crown - And finally... can we talk flower crowns for a second?? I have been into flower crowns for a few years now but I have never mustered the courage to rock one myself. However, I totally plan to make some for the Firefly music festival this year so that cherry will be popped!!! I have visions of the entire wedding party rocking flower crowns.. okay, maybe just the girls. But DEFINITELY Hadley. I can already picture her little face below some sweet baby's breath flowers. I can't wait to make these!!!! I couldn't find the original source for the photo above but here is an awesome DIY I found for the crowns. 

Ughhh is it 2015 yet??? I can't wait to marry you Joshua Beau!!!!
