Major mom fail
Thursday, August 21, 2014
Yesterday started like any other day. I'd actually say it was even more relaxing than usual... I decided to take the morning off from emails/cleaning/shop work/life and lay on the couch with a good book. I can't remember the last time I did that?! Definitely needs to happen more often.
After Hadley's nap we headed out like we do every Wednesday to her My Gym class. She was extra tired and growling for the majority of the class (her newest thing lately.. it's ridiculous) but ended up having a great time towards the end. She really loves when they pull out all the toys for independent play and end the class with a puppet show. She always tries to steal the puppets, little stinker.
We headed to the car afterwards so we could run some errands and grab some lunch. She was a little fussy so I was letting her play with the car keys. I strapped her in to the carseat, grabbed the car keys, threw them in the front seat with the rest of my stuff and shut the door.
Can you guess where this story is going?
My brain did about 37 haywire, freak out flips before I jumped into action. I ran back inside My Gym and declared I locked my baby in my very hot car and needed help. Thank god I was at a place where I knew the people who worked there and they knew us. They we're so incredibly helpful and did a great job trying to keep me calm.
After a quick survey of WHO DO WE CALL? AAA? POLICE? We went with the non-emergent responders at 311 and they sent a firetruck within 6 minutes. Longest 6 minutes of my life. Hadley was losing her shit. Poor baby was so hot, I could see the sweat pooling on her little nose. It was heartbreaking standing there looking through the window trying to comfort her. I knew there was no chance she was gonna calm down but I just didn't want her to think I left her behind in there!!!
She did calm down a bit when she heard the siren and saw three burly firemen breaking into our car. It took them about a minute to get the doors open and I couldn't get her out of there fast enough!!!! The firemen hung around to make sure she didn't need medical attention, gave us tons of cold water and we're so sweet with both of us.
After being briefly questioned by a very serious police officer (talk about SHAME) I decided to forgo the errands and grab some lunch next door to My Gym. I don't think I was ready to get back in that car!!! My heart couldn't handle it!
Once we were eating our sushi and chicken on a stick in air conditioning you would of had no idea anything happened, minus some rosy cheeks and sweaty hair (probably on both of us). We got some ice cream , headed home and snuggled for the rest of the day.
Talk about traumatizing.
I've locked myself out of the car plenty of times and it's always been a fear of mine that something like this would happen with Hadley. FEAR REALIZED. I think it's safe to say those car keys will never leave my person again.
I hope you all have had a less emotionally stressful week!
Here's to the ALMOST weekend :)
