Hadley's latest: 20 months

Friday, January 30, 2015

I can't believe it's been 6 months since the last Hadley's Latest post!
Time is fuggin' flying.

Baby girl has been changing and growing so much. This age has been so fun and I can't wait to see what else is to come with our little sassy pants.

M i l e s t o n e s  :  Baby girl has a full mouth of teeth now.. just waiting for those 2 year old molars to pop through and I think she'll be all set! Rubbing those suckers down is still terrifying but she's getting better at resisting the urge to bite down. EEEEEEK!

She still loves going to My Gym classes each week to play with other kids. Since we don't have any family members on this side of the country her age or that many friends with kids, I'm on the hunt for more activities we can do with little friends in DC. If you know any good ones, definitely let us know!

Her communication skills are continuing to grow. She understands just about everything we ask her and uses a lot of non-verbal communication. Lots of head shakes "no", pointing, showing us things and so on. She says a handful of words, babbles and loves to sing but mostly seems like she just doesn't want to talk yet. We've been trying to boost her confidence and I think playing more with other kids her age will help bring those words out! Everyone keeps telling me that I won't be able to get her to shut up once she starts talking and I honestly can't wait for that!!!! I just want to hear her sweet voice all the time!!!! Plus, life will just be that much easier when she can tell me exactly what she wants.

There is a milestone that I think she's hitting earlier than normal.. and it's called the terrible twos. Holy hell, batman. This girl can throw a tantrum like no other. Luckily, so far they are few and far between. But when they happen (like on this horrific plane ride) they are terrifying. And a little funny. Just a little.

Today, for example, I let Hadley play in the sink while I put her hair up. Distractions are always a must now when trying to do something with her wild mane. She loves playing in the water so she never wants to stop. When I told her we we're all done she did the typical "screw you mom" move and threw her arms up and went limp so I couldn't easily carry her away. Then she threw the remote and a coaster at me. She's so cute, isn't she?!!!!

After that, I told her she needed to go take a little break in her room so I took her up there, locked the door and sat with her for a bit. She proceeded in trying to break out of the room by hanging from the door handle. At one point, she had both her feet up on the wall above her head and was hanging there like a monkey. My first thought was DAYUM she is strong, quickly followed by, my god how far does this determination go?!!!! When she figured out that wasn't working, she started banging her head on the wall, then fell to the floor, rolled around and pulled her hair as hard as she could.

After this went on for a while and she had successfully hit her head on every surface in the room, I gave her a bunch of hugs, tried to get her to take deep breaths and then cuddled her on the couch with her paci. She almost fell asleep and laid there for a long time. I don't know what I'm gonna do when we finally ditch that paci! I think I need it more than she does!!!!! Shiiiiit.

F a v o r i t e  F o o d s  :  So far, Hadley is still a really great eater! We feed her everything we eat and luckily she has no allergies. She loves chicken, yogurt, cheese, all fruits, rice, Chipotle chips & guac (smart girl) and chocolate.

S l e e p  :  The transition to the big girl bed has been going more smoothly these days. She's been sleeping through the night more and more and goes down easily for her naps. We tuck her in with all her babies and stuffed animals, turn on some music and her night light and she zonkers right out :)

This weekend we're getting her room and the nursery painted (and our island!) so we'll be able to start decorating next week! I am so excited!!!!!!

F a v o r i t e  A c t i v i t i e s  :  Playing with Hadley has been so fun these days! She is obsessed with building forts and playing in there like it's her house. She is getting better at coloring with me but still likes to color the walls more than in her coloring book. She has also found a new love for stickers, which she likes to cover us with. Her babies are still her numba one favorites. The other night we gave her a bath with one of her plastic baby dolls and she loved it! I think it's still swaddled in the towel somewhere around here.

^^^^^yes, this is what I normally look like. Our UPS guy has seen me braless more than any human should.

Each night she helps me get dinner ready before daddy comes home. She pulls up a chair to the island and helps me put stuff in the bowls and stir. She also loves to play taste tester.. apparently olive oil is great by itself with just salt and pepper.

No surface is safe with this girl, which has been fun keeping things kid friendly around here. Hadley loves to climb and scale everything. We find her on top of the counters, tables and back of the couch all the time. It used to be enough for us to pull the chairs away but now she knows how to push the chairs over to where she wants them and climb. She also has figured out how to open the fridge which is nice when she gets her own drinks and stuff but not so nice when she gets her little paws on the eggs.

We busted out her Radio Flyer wagon the other day for the first time in a hot minute and she was obsessed! I can't wait to use it more when the weather warms up :)

She also still enjoys an epic dance party. Her current favorite song is Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars. I don't care who you are.. that song rocks. Actually, come to think of it, I'm going to try playing it next time she's mid-meltdown because I think it may be a cure-all.

And of course, she loves playing with her doggie! She throws her the ball and giggles like mad when Cali goes running for it! They play tug of war and Cali even lets Hadley give her hugs every once in a while :)

Things are always crazy with a toddler in the house but we wouldn't have it any other way!

We love you so much Hadley girl! You give the sweetest hugs and kisses and make the goofiest little faces that we can't resist :) Even when you try to head butt us... we still love you!!!! :-P

Happy 20 months girlfriend!

Love,

Gifts for all your loves

Wednesday, January 28, 2015

So I just realized January is almost over (what happened?!) and the shipping deadlines for Valentine's Day are fast approaching (and you know these are important if you really don't want to leave your house) so it's time for a gift guide!

As I've said before, my love for this holiday has really grown since having a babe... and by babe, I mean BABY. I also love the idea of it being a day of celebration of all the loves in your life, including your drunk ass girlfriends.

So I put together a little gift guide for all the different peeps in your life.

I read #GIRLBOSS a few months ago and really enjoyed it. It's motivational and a great empowerment book for any of your girlfriends.

I am UHHHBSESSED with Candy Kirby everything, especially her handmade dolls. I've been waiting for them to come back in stock for months now and it is the perfect time for the girls' Valentine's gift! I got one for both Hadley and baby number two and can't wait to see them in their rooms :)

If someone gave me the burritoful world tote full of burritos, I'd die happy. After consuming all of them. Duh.

I am also incredibly obsessed with Emily McDowell and all she does. Her cards are just what I like.. a little raunchy and lots of fun.

Speaking of cards, I'll be releasing FREE printable cards for Valentine's day soon so keep an eye out!! I've been having so much fun with the designs, I can't wait for you to see :) Plus, nothing says I love you like, "Honey, I didn't pay a dime for this shit."

Also, if you're looking for a cute little Valentine DIY for your little ones (or yourself) check out this DIY headband tutorial from last year. I can't get over how itty bitty Hadley is in these photos!!! My little gal is so dang big these days!!!!!!!

Alright, enough of this mushy stuff.

Bye,

Our go-to dinners

Monday, January 26, 2015

Hey my peoples :)

I don't know about your neck of the woods but it is nasty as some poo outside over here. A snow storm is moving on in but it's not the pretty type. It's wet and icy and slushy and gross. So we've got a pot of Grandma Lucy's tomato sauce cookin on the stove, movies on deck and I've got some of my favorite weekday recipes to share with you guys!

I've been attempting to tackle as many Pinterest recipes as possible since I have so much delicious looking food on my boards (you can find them all here). It's been fun cooking so many different things lately and I've collected a couple favorites that are yummy and really easy to throw together quickly.

We love some chicken over here. And my latest obsession is chicken thighs. I'd go far as to argue that crispy chicken skin is even more delicious than bacon... but that's just me, don't kill me okay!!!!!

My favorite way to cook chicken thighs is to pan roast them in a cast iron skillet until they're nice and golden brown on each side and then finish them in the oven. You can find all the details to the perfect crispy chicken thigh at Bon Appetit. You can make delicious sauces to go along with them, like this mushroom skillet from Damn Delicious

Another new chicken obsession of mine is rotisserie whole chickens. This is so awesome to do on a Sunday so you can eat up all the left over meat throughout the entire week. There are tons of different rotisserie recipes out there that claim to be the best but nothing convinces me like a full-fledge Buzzfeed investigation. So of course, I went with them. And it was truly delicious and super easy.

Next time I think I'll try this one from the yuppy food genius herself, Ina Garten, to try some different flavors.

For steaks, we usually keep it pretty simple with just salt, pepper and some Worcestershire sauce. We've also tried this recipe and I love the rosemary on there.

If you're looking for some yummy piggy, this pork chop recipe is delicious! This herb roasted pork loin has also become a new favorite around here.

As for the sea creatures, I LOVE me some crab and salmon. You can peep this super easy crab cake recipe from my pops on this post and our absolute favorite salmon recipe here from Natasha's Kitchen. The lemon, parsley and dijon are such a bomb combo!!!

To go along with the main protein we usually roast some veggies up. My favorites are these roasted brussels sprouts, carrots and some caramelized onions with mushrooms. Another great side option is some rosemary roasted potatoes! Always a hit.

And there you have it! Most of these things are staples around here and show up at least once a week on the nightly menu. Except the crab cakes.. those are usually a meal I save for special occasions or extreme pregnancy cravings but they're so damn easy I'm about to make them EVERY DAY!!!!!

What are some of your favorite go-to dinners? I'm always looking to expand our recipe book around here!!

I'm also dying to try all of these slow cooker recipes. They all look so good I'm not sure where to start... RAMEN perhaps?! MMMMMM.

It's time for lunch, I can't take this torture any longer.

LOVE & FOOD & NOMNOMS TO YOU ALL,

Love threads

I think having a child made me love Valentine's Day more than ever. I mean before her, I never really celebrated it much. I was single for the majority of my adult life so Valentine's Day was always a lets get really drunk, eat late night McDonalds and pass out next to my best girl friend kind of a night. My mom has always given my sister and I Valentine's Day gifts... she would even send them to us in college so she must of instilled some that in me :)

Not only is putting together a little love-day treat for her really fun but I also love all the heart covered clothes that come out around this time of year. Unlike the weird looks you get when you accidentally send your child out in a Santa shirt after Christmas is over.. you can totally milk the heart sweaters all winter long. SCORE.

I included some duds for all the little men in your life so no one would be left out of this loving holiday!

This week has been crawling by but we've had some fun over here. I had an appointment with my OB on Tuesday and thought I was 27 weeks along but then figured out I was actually 28 weeks and officially in the 3rd trimester. So that was WEIRD! WOAH! WHERE IS THE TIME GOING? HOW DID I LOSE A WEEK? I think it's messing with me because I feel like the baby is squishing my bladder and kicking my ribs way more than when I thought I was only 27 weeks.... I swear I peed 87 times yesterday. I think she was messing with me.

Hadley and I got lots of Minnie Mouse goodies at the party store the other day (PS, don't ever think you can go into a party store with a small child and escape empty handed.... I tried really hard) and I think it's safe to say that someone is officially obsessed. She also has a new obsession with forts which I am so down for. Who doesn't love a good fort?!!!!

Today we got our donut fix at a local dutch market. They have the best homemade donuts I've ever tasted in my ENTIRE LIFE. Life changing donuts I tell ya. We're only near that market every Thursday after her My Gym class so it's quickly becoming a Thursday tradition.
I don't hate it.

heart sweater || scarf last season Little Hip Squeaks

Talk about a mean mug? She's killin it in the ill-grill game.
Mommy's scared.

Also, I shared this salad dressing recipe on my instagram the other night (@lnhudson28) and it's so yummy and tangy!

What you need...

1 pear, diced
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup white wine
2 tsps dijon mustard
dash of balsamic vinegar
1 garlic clove
pinch of salt and pepper

Blend it all up and there you have it!

Lots of love to you all!

Operation organize

Tuesday, January 20, 2015

Hey my people!

I hope all of you had a great weekend :) We we're productive as hell over here. If it's possible to nest 3 months before the baby is due I think that is definitely happening to me. I feel like cleaning and cooking have been all I want to do these days. So that's what we did!

We ordered some industrial Costco shelves for our garage so we could get it organized and fit our car in there! This is the kind of adult shit I get excited about now... organizing the garage! OMG! YAY! Our condo only comes with a 1-car garage and street parking can be limited so organizing our storage space is key.

After some major purging we were able to make enough room for the car (SCORE!) and unpacked some boxes we've had sitting around since July.

Next, I started tackling closets.

Closets are such a cluster fuck. I don't care who you are.. your closet has been a black hole of shoes, clothes you haven't worn in a good 4 years and unidentifiable junk. But a few shelves and storage baskets can at least help you manage the chaos.

I got the storage system from Amazon for our hall closet. Hadley and I put it together so anyone can do it! That girl seriously loves her tools. It's perfect for storing itty bitty shoes, hats, gloves, sunscreen and any other loose items you might have chillin in your hall closet.

I also got these hooks from Amazon and am in love with them. Once I started drilling I had a really hard time stopping. It's addicting to put holes in the walls I tell ya!!!!!!

I also went HAM on the upstairs hall closet. I want to get some organizers for the medicine but other than that I'm so happy to check these things off my to do list! I don't know if it's the New Years vibe or baby nesting but I just can't be stopped!

Did you think I was done?
There's more.

The ultimate girl clusterfuck... under the bathroom sink.

I wish I had some before shots of all these spaces so you could see the differences, but just trust me when I say it was rough. This is one of Hadley's favorite places to destroy so containers we're key. I also wanted to make sure everything had it's own spot so I can keep up with the cleanliness easily.

I don't love my jewelry organizer and since Hadley keeps getting into that as well I'm planning on making a hanging jewelry display. I'll definitely post details on that once I put it together!

And there you have it! A super exciting post about organizing!!!! I hope this helps motivate you to declutter your spaces as well. I already feel so fresh and ready to work on all these other things I've had on my to do list. Like new goodies for the shop!

So here's to fresh beginnings and clean ass closets!

Hadley's big girl room + 6 months pregnant!

Thursday, January 15, 2015

Hey party people :)

As you may have read, last weekend we said bye bye to Hadley's crib and HELLO to a ginormous big girl bed (and some sleepless nights). You can find that post here. It's been a whirlwind but I am super excited to decorate and make it all cozy in there for her!

I decided to put together a little inspiration board to help us plan her room out. We're going to paint in a few weeks and once we finish putting her space together it'll be on to the nursery! HOLY cow! Two little gals next door to each other.. this should be FUN/INTERESTING/EXHAUSTING ;)
I CAN'T WAIT!

adventures poster || blue lamp || hanging light || polka dot sheets || soft pink comforter
yellow lace throw pillow || jenny lind headboard || dancing baby elephant print
elephant on bicycle throw pillow || star canopy || elephant throw pillow || metallic silver throw pillow
faux sheepskin rug || black dandelion curtains

I love all the white, black and grey with pops of bright blue, pink and yellow! We're keeping the elephant theme going from her nursery and adding some whimsical circus elements with the bicycles and canopy. I can't wait to see it all together!

In other news, I hit the 6 month mark yesterday with #thompsonnumbatwo !!!

It's crazy to think she'll be here in just 3 short months... I can't wait to meet you baby girl!!!!

My pregnancy is still going really well. I feel great and don't have many complaints other than gross varicose veins. I don't feel like those count though because I've had them since I was twelve. I know, how UNCOOL is that shit? Thanks gymnastics + genetics, you dirty whores. I'm looking into getting them zapped (correct medical terminology) after the baby so we'll see how that goes.

My cravings have kicked up a little bit lately. The other night all I wanted was crab cakes and some rich chocolate cake. So last night I made my dad's famous homemade crab cakes and even though I almost ripped my entire finger nail off (BLAST YOU COSTCO PACKAGING) they REALLLY hit the spot. They're SUPER easy to make too (recipe below).

Jeff's Famous Crab Cakes

What you need...

16 oz fresh jumbo lump crab meat, pre-cooked
1/2 cup mayonnaise
squirt of yellow mustard
dash of worcestershire sauce
Old Bay seasoning
dash of onion powder
dash of celery salt
dash of dry mustard
dash of salt
dash of pepper
handful of panko or breadcrumbs

What you do...

Turn your oven on to high broil.

Mix together the mayonnaise, mustard, worcestershire, couple shakes of Old Bay seasoning and the rest of the dry spices in a medium sized bowl. Toss in the crab meat and gently fold together. Add the panko last.

Roll into large balls with your hands and place on a greased baking sheet. Sprinkle more Old Bay over top if you'd like. We love that shit here on the Chesapeake Bay!!!

*KEY STEP* Place your crab cakes in the fridge for at least 15 minutes before baking. This will help them hold their shape while cooking.

Once done chilling, immediately broil on high until golden brown. Takes about 8-10 minutes depending on size of crab cakes.

Serve with some tartar sauce.

MMMMMMM NOM NOM NOM.

Enjoy my friends,
